ANLCA Announces Over 70% Drop in Container Transportation Costs from Apapa Port

Beady Nnanna July 2, 2025 News 0 Comments

The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has announced a remarkable reduction in the cost of transporting containers from Apapa Port, citing a drop of over 70 per cent. This development comes as welcome news to stakeholders across the logistics and shipping sectors.

During a courtesy visit to the ANLCA headquarters in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, on Tuesday, the Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Command, Dr. Babatunde Olomu, engaged with ANLCA representatives. Speaking at the event, Emeka Chukwumalu, Chairman of the Apapa Chapter, revealed that the haulage costs have plummeted from an initial N1.2 million to an all-time low of N350,000—a significant relief to operators and cargo owners alike.

Historically, high haulage expenses have been linked to irregularities within the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Eto Call-up system, which caused trucks to face long delays before gaining port access. These delays were often worsened by illegal checkpoints and widespread corruption, further escalating operational costs.

Chukwumalu highlighted that this sharp decline in transportation costs has positively impacted the operational efficiency and profitability of licensed customs agents.

He also expressed appreciation for the recent training program organised by the Apapa Customs Controller. The training, he noted, has been a crucial step toward easing operational challenges within the port.

“The comprehensive training has been instrumental in empowering our members to navigate and overcome the initial difficulties associated with the Eto system. It has streamlined our operations and greatly enhanced efficiency,” Chukwumalu stated.

He further emphasised that the training has delivered tangible financial benefits for members, with the drastic reduction in local transportation costs being a prime example.

“We are truly grateful for this development—the move from N1.2 million to N350,000 has made a significant difference in our operations and overall profitability,” he added.

This positive breakthrough signals a promising step forward in enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and fostering a more conducive environment for trade and logistics at Nigeria’s busiest port.
